Astra Airlines Takes Off

Astra Airlines, a new Thessaloniki-based airline has started flying charter flights to and from Thessaloniki.

The first flight of Astra Airlines, linking Thessaloniki to Rhodes, was realised on July 5.

The company has an 8 million euro business plan which includes the purchase of a 112-seat BAe 146-300 plane and the construction of facilities in the Thessaloniki area.

The new company obtained a license by the Civil Aviation Authority and will fly domestic and international charter flights.

The main shareholders of Astra Airlines are the businessman Ioannis Zlatanis, founder of Interaviator Ltd and Anastasios Zirinis, former CEO of Olympic Aviation.

Astra comes to as a response the inadequate air connection of Thessaloniki, a city with 1.5 million euro and of Northern Greece in general, where 3.5 million people reside, says Mr Zirinis.

Astra Airlines is the first airline to be based in Thessaloniki and the companys officials hope it will boost the local economy of Greeces second biggest city.
