BoGs New Administration To Offer New Dynamism

Giorgos Provopoulos who will take over as head of Greeces central bank in June is considered by many bankers as a person who can restore the institutions prestige.


The general board of the Bank of Greece is expected to approve the appointment of Mr Provopoulos as its governor today.


The 58-year old Provopoulos is considered to be an experienced and competent banker. He was chairman of the Financial Experts Council when Mr Souflias was Finance Minister in 1990-1993 and until recently was managing director of Piraeus Bank. Sources in Piraeus Bank say that he is an especially gifted and experienced banker. He has experience from both private banking and the BoG. He has served as Emporiki Bank chairman, before the bank was privatised. He also served as BoG deputy chairman from 1990 to 1993.


Mr Eleni Louri, an Oxford University graduate and financial director of the Prime Ministers office will be proposed for the post of deputy governor. Ms Louri is a professor at Athens Economy University. She has studied at the aforementioned institution and at London School of conomics & olitical Science and Oxford.


The administration of the Bank of Greece will change on June 14, when Mr Garganas mandate comes to an end.
