Greek Construction Groups Claim Project In Bulgaria

Greek construction groups Ellaktor and GEK TERNA have submitted bids for a 15km road project in Bulgaria, in order to expand their already significant presence in the country.

The project is the third part of Struma highway, budgeted at €53 million, would connect the tourist town Sandanski with village Kulata (close to Promachonas borders).

The Sandanski-Promachonas segment is part of the 133km highway, linking the capital city of Bulgaria, Sofia, with Kulata, while the total cost of construction is estimated to exceed €1 billion.

According to sources, bids have been submitted by GEK TERNA and Aktor, Ellaktor’s subsidiary, in a joint venture with Bulgarian group Trace, a scheme that was granted the construction of a 36km part of Trakia highway.

The two groups are among the 15 companies, which have submitted bids for the project, including Italian Impresa, German Hochtief and Spanish Arranz Acinas.

The contractor would be announced in October, while the construction work is scheduled to begin in November.

The cost is high, because the highway will pass through areas of protected species, therefore a specific type of construction is needed.

The construction sector in Bulgaria has great potential, as an amount of €8 billion is expected to be spent for infrastructure in the coming years, according to the country’s authorities.
