Mitsotakis sends message to Ankara to release two Greek soldiers

  e-mail

Main opposition New Democracy (ND) leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Monday sent a message to Ankara to immediately release the two Greek soldiers that are being detained without charge.

Mitsotakis stressed that Greece would not engage in any thought of "bartering" the two soldiers with the eight Turkish servicemen that fled to Greece and sought asylum after an attempted coup d etat in Turkey.

"The deterrent strength of the Greek armed forces is strong," he underlined during his visit to the 114th Combat Wing and the 331st Squadron, the unit where the fallen Mirage 2000-5 pilot Giorgos Baltadoros had served.

In a statement, Mitsotakis stressed that Greece is always pursuing good-neighbourly relations with Turkey, adding that it cannot accept the question of sovereign rights or policies that are contrary to the rules of good neighbourliness. "I call today from here, from Tanagra, Turkey to immediately release the two Greek officers, who are illegally detained in high security prisons. Greece will not get into any sort of exchange," Mitsotakis said.
